Upcoming Deadlines

All times are in Anywhere on Earth (AoE) time zone. The submission site of each track will open approximately four weeks before its submission deadline.

CHI Publication Formats

CHI 2025 will again use the ACM Primary Article Templates and ACM TAPS Publication Workflow for publication of BOTH the Papers and Extended Abstracts. This ACM page provides a rationale behind this choice.

  • We will be using The ACM Publication System (TAPS) process.
  • The correct template for initial submissions is one of:
    • 1-column Word Submission Template (acm_submission_template.docx)
    • 1-column LaTeX (also on Overleaf). Please note that the default template is set for 2-column and needs to be manually changed to 1-column for initial review using the option shown below ‘)
      • For an anonymous submission, use \documentclass[manuscript,review,anonymous]{acmart}
      • For all others, use \documentclass[manuscript,review]{acmart}.
  • The correct template for publication (i.e., after conditional acceptance) in the DL is one of:
    • 1-column Word Submission Template* (same as for the initial submission)
    • 1- or 2-column LaTeX template* using \documentclass[sigconf]{acmart}. Please note that using the “sigconf” option converts the template into the final 2-column format. Authors should check the placement of figures, tables, and other elements before submitting the source file for final publication. Page and word limits are found in the track instructions and the specific call for participation.
    • * Please note that, after TAPS processing, all submissions will be formatted in alignment with ACM’s standard conference proceedings template in a 2-column format.

CHI 2025 Proceedings Formats

We will follow the workflow defined by the ACM, so please read the instructions on the ACM TAPS workflow page carefully. The ACM workflow requests authors to produce final publications (PDF and HTML5) by themselves using TAPS.

First, authors prepare their manuscript in the designated 1-column format in PDF using LaTeX or Word. LaTeX users should use \documentclass[manuscript,review]{acmart}. For an anonymous submission use \documentclass[manuscript,review,anonymous]{acmart} to automatically replace the authors for “ANONYMOUS AUTHOR(S)”.

Next, authors submit the PDF and the source files via PCS. Reviewers will review the papers in the 1-column format. Please follow the instructions in the respective call for participation regarding page and word limits. Reviewers will be instructed to weigh the contribution of a paper relative to its length. Redundant or verbose writing is strongly discouraged.

Upon conditional acceptance, authors revise the manuscript and submit publication-ready source files to PCS. Further instructions are presented on the Publication-ready Author Instructions page (link tba).

Citation Style

Authors can find the guidelines for citation style at the following link: ACM Reference Formatting.

For Word users utilizing citation management software like Zotero, select the “ACM SIGCHI Proceedings” option under Citation Style (see the example below).

Accessibility

The CHI conference committee requests that authors ensure basic accessibility of their submissions. Please refer to the Guide to an Accessible Submission for more details.

Additional Information on the Publication Workflow

CHI 2025 embraces the new ACM publication workflow. Here, we provide our motivations and additional details caused by the change. Answers to frequently asked questions can be found below.

Our guiding motivation is that TAPS and the new template automate many tasks that have been done manually in the past. We hope this alleviates everyone’s workload during the publication process.

Another key motivation is to support multi-format representations (here is an example). ACM is introducing a new publishing culture that separates content from presentation. Additionally, it is to reduce the manual work and resulting costs of editors to detect and fix problems in manuscripts for production.

What the reviewers see while reviewing (1-column) is different from what the final publications look like (2-column). The authors make their initial submissions in the ACM’s submission format (1-column PDF). If accepted, the authors upload publication-ready source files (1-column Word or [1 or 2-column] LaTeX) to TAPS. TAPS will then generate the 2-column PDF and responsive HTML5 document for both Word and LaTeX submissions in the ACM conference publishing standard 2-column format. Please note that TAPS will auto-convert the 1-column Word file into a 2-column PDF.

Authors and reviewers are expected to work together to keep papers concise. The longer the paper is, the more significant the contribution must be. A paper that extends beyond the typical length will be scrutinized.

We strongly encourage authors to familiarize themselves with the template early on. We recommend using the LaTeX template as it yields far fewer issues which then require time-consuming debugging. Please send questions or ideas to publications@chi2025.acm.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the motivation for this change?

A: There are multiple motivations for us to adopt TAPS and the new templates associated with them. First, it allows us to create documents that are mobile adaptive and more accessible overall. Second, it helps our work become more discoverable in the ACM Digital Library. Third, it brings us into alignment with other ACM SIGs and conferences, allowing staff to focus on one, improved process. Fourth, it removes some dependencies and costly manual processes we have had in terms of making papers ready for publication.

Q: What was the decision-making process?

A: ACM has been working on transitioning to this new workflow for several years, following industry standards in publishing. Other SIGCHI conferences have been successfully transitioning to this workflow. SIGCHI then decided to follow it for CHI. Following the experience of CHI from previous years, we have decided to follow this new workflow with the authors producing the final publication (version of record) PDF and HTML5 using TAPS.

Q: It is really important for me to have full control over the final layout and the WYSIWYG feature of Word is critical. Will I lose such control in the new workflow?

A: No, authors do not lose control over the final layout. The proofs generated by TAPS still need to be validated by the authors and, once the proofs have been generated, authors can choose to retract and resubmit if they choose to make changes to the layout. Authors can also create a tickets with the TAPS Support team from their TAPS dashboard if they want any specific changes to the layout.

Q: Can I review a paper in the same format that appears in the final publication?

A: No. The 1-column review format has been optimized for the TAPS workflow and has been used successfully in many ACM conferences. We are trying to make the publication workflow consistent across all ACM venues. Furthermore, TAPS relies on ACM templates, which do not include a 2-column Word template. For the sake of consistency, all authors submit in the 1-column format.

Q: What figure size shall I use in the 1-column submission?

A: In general, authors should put figures in the 1-column submission in a size equal to the size to appear in the final 2-column publication version to avoid re-creating figures for the final 2-column version. Column-wide (0.5-page width) figures in the final publication should appear as 0.5-page-width figures in the submission, leaving 0.5-page blank space. Page-wide (1-page width) figures in the final publication should appear as 1-page-width figures in the submission. LaTeX users: Please avoid scaling images and use the exact size. Word users: Please avoid using the clipping/cropping feature for images and use the exact size. Please refer to the detailed image specifications for submitting to TAPS here.

Q: Extended abstract venues impose page length limits to submissions. How shall I count page length? In 1-column (submission) or 2-column (final publication) format?

A: Page length should be counted in the 1-column format (submission format in PDF). The 2-column version can just be generated from the initial material using TAPS. Adding substantial content to the publication-ready version that the reviewers and chairs did not ask for is not allowed. The authors do not have direct control over the page length of the final publication (PDF and HTML produced by TAPS), so the length of the final publication may vary.

Q: Will this have as many problems as previous template changes?

A: ACM and CHI have been working on moving to new templates since CHI 2019. Previous template changes have had problems and/or cost significant money to fix. While there will likely be some friction as we change a major process, everyone involved has learned lessons from these early challenges. As always, your template chairs are ready to help you in case you run into problems.

Q: In the publication-ready form, is it really true that Word users submit 1-column source files and LaTeX users submit 2-column source files (“sigconf” style)? It seems to be contradictory.

A: The ACM Word template is 1-column, but the LaTeX template allows 1- and 2-column formats. Thus, LaTeX users can submit either 1- or 2-column source files to TAPS. The TAPS system accepts a 1-column Word source file or a 1- or 2-column LaTeX source and generates a 2-column PDF and 1-column HTML5 in both cases.

Q: Can you please explain how to configure Overleaf?

A:

  1. Go to the “ACM Conference Proceedings Primary Article Template” in Overleaf.
  2. Click on the Open as a Template button.
  3. Delete the following files:
    1. sample-lualatex.tex
    2. sample-sigconf.tex
    3. sample-xelatex.tex
    4. acmart.pdf
    5. README.txt
  4. Go to the file sample-authordraft.tex.
    1. As an option, you can use the “review” and “anonymous” styles: \documentclass[manuscript,review,anonymous]{acmart}
      1. The review option adds line numbers to your paper
      2. The anonymous option replaces the authors section for “ANONYMOUS AUTHOR(S)”. In case of an anonymous submission, please remember that your submission must be anonymized whether you use this style or not.
  5. There are other files that you may delete or replace later:
    1. sample-base.bib: This is a sample bibliography. You can create your own bib file and use it for your references.
    2. sample-franklin.png: This is a sample png image. You will delete and replace it later with your proper figures.

Now you are ready to begin. You can rename your files if you want.
